One of the most popular methods we have used with thousands and thousands of birds – from Black Palm Cockatoos to teeny tiny Zebra Finches – is a water misting application of the essential oils contained within the Feathered Blend NEAT. In the past, care givers would purchase all three oils contained within this blend, and mix them together with water to make their own spray. Feathered Blend NEAT is a ready mixed preparation of this popular recipe – making it more convenient for you to mix up your spray solution. You can read more below, on the individual benefits of each essential oil contained within this blend.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), Orange (Citrus sinensis), Lemon (Citrus limon)

Ingredient Information

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

Incredibly versatile, Lavender is likely one of the best all around essential oils available.  That being said, Lavender is also one of the most adulterated and synthetically created essential oil on the market today.  Very few available Lavender oils are pure enough to be called Veterinary Grade, qualifying for use in animals.  Lavender is incredibly mild and well suited for use in all species of animal.  It is especially indicated for use in birds with skin conditions, feather picking, wounds, bumble foot, self-mutilation, fungal skin infections, for calming effects, to aid with sleep, for burns and frostbite, with allergies, high blood pressure, seizures, and various spasms.  Being anti-infectious, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, and more – Lavender is a virtual “pocket knife” of the essential oil world.

Orange (Citrus sinensis)

Orange oil has been used extensively in all species of animals, and in almost every way imaginable.  With a high Limonene content, Orange oil is well indicated for anti-tumoral benefits.  Orange oil is commonly used with tumors, cancer, depression, and for general health.

Lemon (Citrus limon)

Lemon oil is widely used in all species, and in many routes.  Lemon is particularly used in birds for anti-tumoral properties, immune stimulation, to increase white blood cells, for obesity and lipomas (fatty tumors), for gentle cleansing and detoxification, for anti-bacterial properties, to cleanse the air and reduce disease transmission, hypertension, digestive issues, and anxiety.

Instructions for Use

Feathered Blend NEAT

PrintFeathered Blend is a wonderful blend for water-based diffusion for all animal species!

The Feathered Blend NEAT and Feathered Plus NEAT blends are already mixed in an ideal ratio for your avian friend.  We recommend that you rock the bottle of essential oils, prior to mixing your spray solution.  The gentle rocking of your essential oil bottles prior to use, ensures that the blend is well mixed, and it is a good recommendation with all essential oil blends.

Both Feathered products contain citrus oils that can be photosensitizing.  Avoid applying to skin that will be exposed to intense sunlight or full spectrum UV light within 24 hours.  Although in practice, we have not witnessed any concerns with birds using these sprays to sun or light exposure – it is still wise to be aware of the potential.  Caution with full natural and intense sunlight is more likely needed than with the full spectrum indoor lighting, used commonly for birds and reptiles.

It is important that you use a glass spray bottle and an appropriate spray nozzle when using essential oils in a water misting application.  The bottles available through animalEO have been used in our practice for many years, and have held up to very concentrated essential oil use, and long term daily use. We recommend the 4 ounce (120 mL) glass spray bottle, with trigger sprayer for the Feathered Blend NEAT or Feathered Plus NEAT recipes.

With either product used, you will mix the water misting spray in the same way.  For birds new to this application, it is always recommended to start with a lighter application, adding less drops to your water, and then gradually increasing the concentration over time.

To make either Feathered Blend or Feathered Plus water mist – please follow these directions:

  • Place between 4 to 60 drops of either blend into a 4 ounce (120 mL) glass spray bottle.
  • Add distilled water to fill the bottle.  Shake well before each application, then mist the bird with the spray up to twice a day.  Birds love this spray, and even those who routinely dislike a shower with a traditional spray bottle are often attracted to being sprayed in this manner.

Other Animals:  For Dogs and other animals who are accepting of a water-mist application, Feathered and Feathered Plus have been made into a water mist to mist onto areas of concern.  One common use is for tear staining on dogs.  Just mix a light solution of Feathered or Feathered Plus into a glass spray bottle.  Place 1-10 drops of Feathered into 4oz of distilled, Reverse Osmosis (RO), clean pure water (bottled spring water) – shake well before each use, and mist over the face/eye areas once to twice a day.  For dogs who will be in direct sunlight or have sparse hair – I would recommend only misting in the evening, as then there will be plenty of time before sunlight exposure for the essential oils to dissipate.Print
