Description

What is an AromaBoost you ask?  An AromaBoost is one of the most well-rounded and complete essential oil treatments you can give or receive.  It consists of a series of specifically selected oil blends, generally applied in a specific order (but don’t worry if you don’t get it perfect!), and massaged in.  It really can be a very simple, but effective and powerful treatment for an animal.

Over the years, I have adapted previously used techniques (developed and intended for humans) into a much more safe, effective, and simple technique for animals.  Clinically, these past techniques served us well in the veterinary setting, however there were always certain flaws to the procedure in practice. One of the most significant obstacles for my clients, was the complexity of the techniques we were being taught as “good for animals.”  We also simply found that the concentrations used were far stronger than necessary for animals.

Remembering which oil to use, when to use it, and how to stroke it in after applying it – was a bit daunting to those I taught the technique to.  Eventually, I just began to say “Just get the oils on them!”…  Another complication with animals, is that they are often a moving target – so we want the techniques we use on them to be simple, quick, and well accepted.  With animalEO, I was able to develop what I consider to be the “perfect” technique for applying many powerful oils to animals, while eliminating certain oils that are less appropriate to use, and including oils that I found incredibly helpful for a variety of veterinary conditions.  With the sheer number of essential oils contained within an AromaBoost – you would likely have to spend over $500 to acquire all of the oils.  Oils like Spruce (Black Spruce, Picea mariana) and Balsam Fir are integral parts of our veterinary ability to eliminate the need for steroid use for many of our patients, and I felt that they were so important, that they should be included in every AromaBoost.

There are currently two types of AromaBoost Collections.  The AromaBoost RTU Collection and the AromaBoost LITE Collection.  RTU means Ready To Use – and really has revealed itself as one of the most appropriate concentrations for so many larger or sick animals.  However, there still are a few animals who do need a “bit less” in their concentration – or for animals who are not ill, are a bit smaller in size or sensitivity, and need a lesser concentration for just routine health applications – we also have the AromaBoost LITE Collection!  As we continue using the LITE Collection with more and more animals, it is quickly revealing that it is just as effective for most dogs, as the RTU version.

In general, we truly find that the RTU or LITE applications of essential oils (which basically means they are diluted in Coconut Oil to start out with…) is more effective, even for large animals such as horses and cows.  While some people may recommend “neat” or undiluted applications of oils – this is rarely necessary and is often a way to sell more oils, while putting animals at undue risk.

Ingredients

AromaBoost LITE #1

Ingredients:  Fractionated Coconut Oil, Essential Oils of Oregano (Oreganum vulgare), Thyme (Thymus vulgaris), Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)

The essential oils contained within Formula #1 have powerful actions, and are often reported to have abilities to reset and clear the body of harmful microbes.  Oregano and Thyme are known as “hot” oils, so they do carry the potential to create warmth and irritation to sensitive tissues.  If skin ever appears red, irritated, or you accidentally get this formula in your eye, please stop all essential oil applications, and apply Fractionated Coconut Oil to the area of need.

AromaBoost LITE #2

Ingredients:  Fractionated Coconut Oil, Essential Oils of Basil (Ocimum basilicum), Marjoram (Origanum majorana), Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens)

AromaBoost #2 contains Basil which is widely used to support histamine-related conditions in our veterinary practice. Although there have been some cautionary statements in regards to Basil with individuals who seizure or have epilepsy, we have not found this to be an issue at all when used properly.  The AromaBoost has been a hallmark support for many of our patients, especially those with seizures, and although we monitor all animals closely for any sort of adverse response to oils (no matter what the oil is) – in practice we have seen many more benefits than reasons to avoid the use of Basil.

Marjoram is well known as one of the “musculoskeletal” supporting essential oils, but it is also indicated to support respiratory conditions, the gastrointestinal tract, normal fluid handling, circulatory conditions, and more.  Marjoram is known for its support of the hormonal systems, and is an important part of our Hormone Blend.

And, let’s not forget Cypress.  Mainly used to support circulation and all forms of blood support in animals, it has a major role in full body support.

AromaBoost LITE #3

Ingredients:  Fractionated Coconut Oil, Essential Oils of Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea), Spruce (Picea mariana), Blue Cypress (Callitris intratropica)

Formula #3 couldn’t be much more spectacular!  Balsam Fir is wonderful for support of any musculoskeletal condition, respiratory conditions, emotional work, inflammatory conditions, support of stress hormone recovery, and more!  Spruce (actually Black Spruce variety), is a very special oil, rich in spiritual connection and is also indicated for musculoskeletal conditions, sinus and respiratory support, immune support, hormone support, and more.  Spruce is also a fundamental essential oil for our veterinary practice to use when we wish to decrease the need for prescription steroids.  The use of the AromaBoost for all conditions for which steroids are recommended, has shown incredible responses.  Blue Cypress is an equally amazing oil.  Blue in color, as well as thick in consistency, this oil is showing major benefits when used in combination with our protocols.

AromaBoost LITE #4

Ingredients:  Fractionated Coconut Oil, Essential Oils of Peppermint (Mentha piperita), Ginger (Zingiber officinalis), Marjoram (Origanum majorana), Copaiba (Copaifera officinalis), Anise (Pimpinella anisum), Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), Juniper (Juniperus communis), Basil (Ocimum basilicum), Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus), Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin)

Formula #4 contains the oils within G.I. Goe, just in a slightly different ratio.  This blend is incredibly indicated for all things Gastrointestinal.  And gastrointestinal dysfunction is high in almost every condition I see in the veterinary hospital.  The G.I. tract should be supported in all forms of dis-ease in my opinion – and that is why #4 is so important to be included within the AromaBoost.

AromaBoost LITE #5

Ingredients:  Fractionated Coconut Oil, Essential Oils of Copaiba (Copaifera officinalis), Peppermint (Mentha piperita), Helichrysum (H. italicum), Myrrh (Comminphora myrrha)

Last, but certainly not least, is AromaBoost #5.  This may be one of my most favorite blends.  Similar to Dog Breath, this formula contains slightly different ratios to make it the “Grande Finale” of the AromaBoost.

Peppermint has many properties, but in this final application, we use it especially for its characteristic of being a “driving oil.”  This means that Peppermint often aids other oils in penetrating the skin and tissues, deeper and being more effective.  And finally Myrrh, is often referred to as a “Mother Oil” it is that important.  Myrrh is supportive for many endocrine and hormonal conditions including support of the Thyroid, growth hormones, pituitary gland function, and hypothalamus function.

Who, Why & How

Who do I use an AromaBoost® for???

For Dogs, AromaBoost has been an important part of our routine health maintenance, flea and tick prevention, and immune system support.  Almost every condition will benefit from a supportive application of an AromaBoost.  If you have been using the RTU version with no issue – then by all means – continue using it.  However if your dog is in total health, or has seemed a bit overwhelmed with the AromaBoost RTU at times – trying the AromaBoost LITE option is an excellent idea!  As we move forward, we are finding that AromaBoost LITE is an excellent starting point for almost all dogs – and we recommend starting with the LITE Collection if you are first starting out.

While AromaBoost is not intended for cats, please do not be concerned if your cat contacts the product after application to your dog, or even if they decide to lick your hands or dog!  Although many of our products are not “intended” to be used on cats, this is mainly because cats simply enjoy products made and formulated specifically for them, or the concentration may be a bit too strong for direct application to a cat.  For cats we recommend KittyBoostKittyBoost LITE or an appropriate Body Boost in place of AromaBoost.  Please see the recommendations on the Cats Page for more animalEO products that cats enjoy!

For Horses, the AromaBoost RTU is an excellent starting point especially if a horse is struggling with a more severe illness such as strangles.  However horses can still gain many benefits from AromaBoost LITE as well.  Many people believe that neat oils are necessary for larger animals, but as a whole, more frequent applications of diluted oils are actually more effective for most animals and physical bodies.  Although it may seem like more work to apply oils more often, your animal friend will benefit from your efforts.

For Cows, Goats, Sheep, Llama, and other similar animals – you can view the AromaBoost in a similar way as for horses.  While in years past I might have reached for a NEAT application for cattle, often because they are handled with less frequency, we clearly noticed that the diluted applications actually lasted longer, and seemed to benefit the animal more.  If you are dedicated to better methods, you will figure out a way to apply once or twice a day during really critical needs.  And – this is what turns out to be best for the actual animal.  Even with the AromaBoost being applied to one herd member, other members of the herd will benefit by association.  Since I have a “family cow” – it is very easy for me to apply oils to her even daily, or twice a day, if needed.  Ideally, a “body” will be exposed to smaller amounts of the “things it needs” more often, rather than being “slammed” with one big dose of an essential oil.  This creates a situation of the most ideal assimilation and use of the natural items we are providing to aid in healing and health. Think of it this way…are you healthier drinking one gallon of water, all in one sitting, once a week….OR…would you be better off drinking smaller amounts of water multiple times a day? Certainly, multiple times a day, in smaller amounts is a more ideal situation.  This is true for most “tools” we provide to the body for holistic health, not just essential oils.

It is important to recognize that regular use of essential oils can help to keep the body strong, enabling it to prevent many conditions in the first place.  AromaBoost is a perfect application to include at least monthly for any animal.

What about Cats, Rats, and Birds?  There is a “Boost” for everyone!  For cats, the KittyBoost, KittyBoost LITE, or one of the Body Boosts will be the ideal formulation and technique for them.  However, the KittyBoost is not just for cats, and many dogs, small and large alike will benefit from the use of the milder KittyBoost.  The KittyBoost can also be used as a massage rub for horse tendons, injured legs, and all sorts of things.  You can read more about the KittyBoost by CLICKING HERE.  The CritterBoost is the formulation that we use for most Rabbits, Rats, Gerbils, Birds, and other various “critters”.  Again, cats and dogs can also use the CritterBoost – and there are many benefits to it as well.  Read more about the CritterBoost by clicking on its name.

How do I use the AromaBoost???

Whether you use the AromaBoost RTU or the AromaBoost LITE – basically you will be applying them in the same way.  Apply each formula within the AromaBoost in order, starting with #1 and ending with #5.  You will apply each of these formulas, one right after another.  All in one session.  You do not have to wait any certain length of time between dripping and rubbing each formula.  Simply drip the appropriate number of drops up the back starting with formula #1, rub it in, and then apply formula #2 in the same way until you have applied all 5 formulas.

Each AromaBoost RTU Collection also comes with a bottle of Fractionated Coconut Oil (also called FCO for short).  You may or may not have to use the FCO at all.  It is included for flexibility, and just in case you might need to “calm down” some irritated skin, or apply it to an area such as the eyes, or other sensitive mucus membranes, that may have been irritated with an application of essential oils.  For example, AromaBoost #1 contains Oregano, Thyme, and Frankincense.  Oregano and Thyme are known as “hot oils” – and since I have accidentally wiped my face and eyes after massaging these oils onto my dogs – I can attest to the fact that it can burn quite a bit!  Applying the FCO to the area (yes even in your eyes if needed) of irritation brings the most effective relief to the situation.  You DO NOT want to attempt to rinse off essential oils from eye contact, or from skin that may have gotten red or irritated.  Water does not effectively dilute the oil, and can often make it spread and the reaction feel even worse!  If you have a particularly sensitive animal – applying the FCO along the spine prior to any of the application of the AromaBoost RTU can make the entire application more mild in nature.

AromaBoost LITE – does not come with FCO.  It is already diluted in such a way that you are unlikely to need an extra bottle of Fractionated Coconut Oil on hand.  Don’t be fooled though – although this is a LITE version – it most certainly is still VERY strong in action.  It is more and more common that we recommend starting most dogs with the AromaBoost LITE Collection versus the RTU version (horses are more likely to start with RTU when illness is present) – unless there are more severe health issues at hand.

How often do I apply an AromaBoost???

This really can vary with what you are attempting to do for your animal.  For general health and well being, I try to apply an AromaBoost to our dogs, horses, cows, goats, donkeys, mules, and pigs at least monthly.  However, as part of our canine flea and tick prevention, we use the AromaBoost RTU or LITE during the “bad part of the season” even daily! Usually every 3-7 days, is adequate for most of the “buggy” season – but there is a 2 week stretch at our house where mosquitoes, ticks, and various other bugs are just horrible, and a daily application can really make a difference in prevention.  During this time period, I will also “Pet” each of the AromaBoost RTU or LITE formulas down their legs, and around their ankles, after completing each back application.  This provides another layer of protection, especially from ticks that like to start their journey by crawling up our dogs’ legs (or horses, etc…)  Read more about Petting Techniques.  I would say that for more severe bug issues – I tend to rely on the RTU version of AromaBoost more.

In general, I recommend that you apply your selected AromaBoost Collection once, then see how your animal responds.  You will be able to judge if the results you see last 1 day, 3 days, or maybe a week.  For most conditions, this will be how we determine how often we will apply the AromaBoost.  For serious conditions such as Parvo, Equine Herpes Virus, Pneumonia, Heaves, etc…it is more and more likely that you will apply an AromaBoost every 1-3 days initially.

Instructions for Use

AromaBoost LITE Collection

PrintBirds & Exotics: AromaBoost LITE is not intended for these animals.  Please read about CritterBoost, KittyBoost, KittyBoost LITE, AdrenoBalance, CardioBoost, LiverBoost, NeuroBoost, SugarBalance, ThyroBalance, UroBoost, Boost in a Bottle, or Boost in a Bottle LITE for blends that are intended for these species.  You can also read about recommendations for different animal species under “Learn” on our menu.

Cats:  AromaBoost RTU and AromaBoost LITE are not intended for cats.  We recommend that you start with KittyBoost LITE or KittyBoost if you wish to apply a full body support blend to your cat.  Body Boosts such as AdrenoBalance, CardioBoost, LiverBoost, NeuroBoost, SugarBalance, ThyroBalance, or UroBoost may also be appropriate for your cat.  As previously stated, while we do not recommend applications directly to your cat, your cat will be completely safe around other animals that have had an AromaBoost applied to them.

Dogs:  For small dogs, around 10 pounds (4.5 kgs) and smaller, we will usually drip about 3-5 drops of AromaBoost LITE along their spine. For each formula, #1, #2, #3, and so on…we’ll drip 3-5 drops up the back.  Then after dripping the oils on, you just massage them in.  There is no special stroke or method.  While we generally apply from tail to head (and there are actual reasons for this…) you can actually apply head to tail as well if that works better for you!  There is no right or wrong, the most important part is that your dog gets the application, not the style in which you perform it!  We often “hear” that for neurologic conditions, stroking from head to tail is better.  I have not found any definite evidence to this, and certainly do not think any harm is done if the stroke is done in an opposite direction.  With energy fields and meridians (known in Chinese Medicine for thousands of years), there is a definite “flow” of energy for all species, human and animal.  For those of you who are well versed in the energetic fields and properties, or in canine massage, reflexology, or acupressure, combining these skills and treatment options along with the oil applications is absolutely indicated and synergistic!  However, for the “average Joe” – please do not feel that you will mess anything up if you circle your massage clock-wise, counter-clockwise, from head to tail, or from tail to head!  Easy is the name of the game!

For larger dogs – you can apply more drops of each formula.  We generally apply approximately 5-8 drops for dogs between 25-50 pounds, and 8-12 drops for dogs over 50 pounds.  The nice thing with the AromaBoost RTU or LITE, is that counting the drops is slightly less important, as the formulation is already at a dilution rate that the body handles well.

Horses, Cows, Goats, and other Large Animals:  We generally recommend the use of AromaBoost RTU for this group of animals, especially if they are experiencing a health concern.  For general maintenance of healthy animals, AromaBoost LITE Collection can be used.  Each Formula can be dripped up the entire spine – with enough drops to reach from tail to head.  The drops are spaced approximately 3 inches apart, then rubbed in after each formula is applied.  But remember, there is no right or wrong with the LITE formula.  If you suspect that your horse may be particularly sensitive to oil applications, then start out applying only 5-8 drops along their back.  You can always apply more later, but you cannot “take it away.”  That is one of the most important concepts to understand with use of aromatherapy in animals.  Start with really light applications, you may just be surprised at how effective they are, and will not need to waste additional oils by applying more than is needed!Print
